The cat's well and truly out of the bag - Croatia is no longer the secretive, hidden gem of festival locations that it once was. The beauteous European country has for some time now been home to some of the best festivals the world has to offer, complete with paradisaic surroundings and all the sunshine you can handle. There's no wonder that it's become the go-to destination for those looking to combine the holiday and festival experience.
As one of the most unique festivals on the Dalmation coast, Soundwave Festival Croatia has repeatedly captured our attention for its faultless purveying of the finest in soul, funk, hip hop, electronica, reggae - we could go on. Following on from our previous article of praise for the Soundwave experience, we've had a quick look at what each day has in store for this year. Day tickets for each day are available, although naturally we recommend going for the full weekend to enjoy the full Soundwave experience.
Things kick off on Thursday 17th July with none other than Stockport turntablist and tea expert Mr Scruff leading the way. The mulit-talented beat smith and Ninja Tune favourite has since the mid nineties been treating us to his original take on electronica, jazz, downtempo, soul, trip hop, and just about everything else.
Friday the 18th sees must see slots come from one of the most intriguing, off kilter drum n bass producers of the moment - Om Unit, as well as Leeds based live dub, reggae and ska nine piece Gentleman's Dub Club, and the blisfful, atmospheric electronic melancholia of Flako.
One of dubstep's most singular voices heads up Saturday's line up - The Bug. With a sound that mixes crushing bass weight with industrial drums and enormous echo chambers, his sound remains as fresh ever, as he continues to mould a sound somewhere in between grime, dancehasll, ragga and dubstep . Expect to have your mind rewired.
Multi award-winning electronica wizard Gold Panda and Fun Lovin' Criminals main man Huey Morgan are just two of the other must sees on Saturday. Stones throw mainstay, lauded Beat Conducta, and just about the coolest person on the planet - Madlib puts in a rare performance on the Sunday, joined by label mate Jonwayne, whilst Monday welcomes one of the busiest live reggae fusion bands in the world - Fat Freddy's Drop, for one of their irresistibly rabble rousing appearances, guaranteed to end the festival on a massive high.
